Caring for Your Hair Extensions
Your new Great Lengths extensions will look their best for longer with the right care at home. Here's everything you need to know.
THE FIRST 48 HOURS
Please don't wet your hair for 48 hours after any Great Lengths service, including your first application and your maintenance appointments. This gives the bonds time to settle, so they won't slip from coming into contact with shampoo or other products too soon.
GENERAL CARE
- Avoid tinted shampoos and conditioners.
- Over time, you'll notice a small amount of your own hair caught in the bonds. This is your natural hair shedding as it normally would. It doesn't mean the extensions are pulling hair out.
- If you notice a bond slipping, or feel any discomfort, contact us so we can find the cause and fix it.
- If you have any concerns or lose an extension in the first month, send us a photo of the strand or get in touch with your stylist so we can talk it through.
SLEEPING
- Make sure your hair is completely dry and brushed before bed.
- Tie it in a soft, loose ponytail or plait to stop it tangling overnight.
- A silk or satin pillowcase helps too, as it lets your hair glide rather than catch while you sleep.
WASHING
- Use the Great Lengths products we recommend, as they're made to keep extensions in their best condition.
- In the shower, tilt your head back and wash from the top of your head down. Avoid tipping your head forward.
- Apply conditioners, detanglers and masks to your mid-lengths and ends only, keeping them away from your scalp and the bonds.
- After washing, apply Great Lengths Anti Tap Water to bring your hair back to its natural pH balance.
DRYING
- Wrap your hair in a microfibre wrap or towel to soak up the moisture.
- If you use a hairdryer, keep it on medium to low heat, and finish with a cool shot once your hair is completely dry.
- Your Great Lengths brush is for everyday brushing only. It isn't made for heat, so keep it away from your hairdryer.
- For blow-drying, we recommend a brush with softer bristles, which glides through extensions without pulling on the bonds. Your stylist can suggest one that suits your hair.
BRUSHING
- Brush your hair three times a day (twice a day for curly hair) with your Great Lengths brush. This stops matting before it starts.
- Use gentle but firm strokes in a curved motion: onto your head, over the bond, then off your head. This is the best way to brush and detangle your extensions.
- Avoid hard-bristle brushes, as they can cause the bonds to slip.
- Separate the strands with your fingers, then brush slowly, close to the scalp.
- Start at the nape of your neck and work up, section by section, until you've brushed your whole head.
- Never use a comb near your scalp or the bonds.
We'll go through this with you at your consultation and your application appointment, so you know exactly how much pressure to use. If you're ever unsure, just get in touch and we'll walk you through it again.
STYLING
You can use hot tools and rollers on your extensions. Keep them at least 3 cm away from the bonds.
SWIMMING
Swimming in salt water or chlorine, and anything else that keeps your hair damp for long periods, can shorten the life of your extensions.
- Before swimming, wet your hair completely. This stops salt water and chlorine soaking in.
- After swimming, wash your hair straight away as you normally would. Shampoo twice, then condition your mid-lengths and ends only.
- Finish with Great Lengths Anti Tap Water, then dry the bond area as described above.
RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS
We recommend La Biosthétique haircare to cleanse, hydrate and repair. It's suitable for all hair types, including Great Lengths extensions.
Extension hair doesn't get the natural oils from your scalp, so it can need more moisture than your own hair. If your extensions start to feel dry or coarse, use a hair mask in place of your conditioner.
REMOVAL AT SIX MONTHS
Your extensions need to be removed by the six-month point in their cycle, even if they still look and feel beautiful.
The health of your natural hair is always our number one priority. Your own hair is what supports each strand, so removing your extensions at the right time keeps it healthy, strong and well cared for.
Please make sure your removal appointment is booked in for the right time. If you're not sure when yours is due, just ask your stylist.
